You may have noticed that it’s been a little quiet in the ol’ “song a week” department the last few weeks. It’s not for lack of ideas; it’s for lack of time/energy to finish those ideas.

I knew this would happen when I started: that I would get too busy, or lose momentum, or decide to watch another episode of Friday Night Lights or whatever else instead of playing music. But I started out on this project for a reason, and I’m not ready to give up on it.

This song started as a melody drifting around in my head a few weeks ago. When I sat down to work it out on guitar, I realized that I had no lyrics whatsoever, except for the opening words, “beautiful horizon.”

I didn’t know what the song was about.

On Monday, October 17th, I decided to lay down an instrumental version and be done with it, for the sake of this project. I did, and it was fine, but I decided not to post it. I wanted words. I wanted it to be about something — I just didn’t know what.

Yesterday I was innocently reminded that I have been slacking on my obligation to this project. So today, I sat down around noon with the guitar, re-recorded the instrumental tracks, and started writing and recording the words, a verse and a chorus at a time, til they were done. By 3 o’clock, the song was finished. With few exceptions, what you hear is the first and only take, minutes after the words were finished.

Turns out this song (play below or download here) is mostly about the last couple of weeks. Go figure.

If you’re interested in hearing the instrumental “demo” (funny, having a demo of a demo), here it is (play below or download here):
