I woke up Tuesday morning slightly panicked about pulling off a song for this week.

McKinze was in Tbilisi with the newer MacBook (i.e. my recording studio), I had the old white MacBook with an older version of GarageBand and a really crappy internal microphone (I know, I know — first world problems), I had no frontrunner of an idea, and I pretty much had to be done with everything by Tuesday night because I was heading in to Tbilisi Wednesday morning. Plus, I had a ton of things to do Tuesday.

So what do I do? Get on Facebook, of course. It’s 7 AM and soon I’ve got myself trapped in a wormhole of looking at old pictures, friends’ pictures and status updates of people I rarely check up on. I finally pull myself away, make the bed, and the words “I got a little bit nostalgic, couldn’t stop myself” get lodged in my brain with a little accompanying melody. So I sat down and picked up the guitar.

A few hours later, the guitar and vocals for this song, Fences, were recorded. Before my host brother and sister even got out of bed, actually (thus the “hushed” nature of the song). After taking a break to eat and go to work, I came back and started sprinkling in other instruments, and before long the song kinda took off.

By 5:00 it was finished, and I think it’s my favorite recording of the project so far. Definitely the most “complete” use of GarageBand as a tool. That’s not how I want every week to go — down to the wire on “backup” equipment — but I’m always grateful when songs come together as quickly as this one.

Another good one for turning up loudly in the headphones. Play below or download here.
